Not only does it require the know-how for making and serving delicious food but it requires food safety expertise, business sense, and a flair for managing people as well. An effective Manager can make all the difference in a food service establishment.

Diners in successful restaurants may never see or think about the restaurant manager. Customer often asks to speak to a manager if they feel any difficulties or complaint about the services, but the bulk of a restaurant manager’s duties involves behind the scenes administrative work.  So who is a restaurant manager? In short, he is the one who is responsible for all the operations and planning necessary to keep the restaurant running smoothly.

All Restaurants are generally divided into two areas, front of the house which includes customer facing positions such as hosts, bartender and other service staff and back of the house which includes chefs and cooks, dishwasher and other kitchen staff. Being Restaurant Manager, he has to be responsible for both the areas.

There are the certain skills required to become a successful and effective restaurant manager. If you work for a relatively small restaurant with single location, you may need a broad skill set but be ready to operate at a relatively low volume. If you work for a national or multinational brand or organization, you may have more narrowly defined area of focus, but have responsibilities across a larger scale. These skills could be such as sales & marketing, social media awareness, customer service, financial management, inventory management, leadership, communication, food safety awareness, software skills, human resources management etc.

Courses to become a Restaurant Manager:

Students can opt for Hotel Management Degree after the completion of their 12th standard from any institute in India. The study of Hotel Management has equal emphasis on Theoretical and Practical knowledge. Students spend 6 months in the industry for their IT- Industrial Training, which is almost mandatory.

To become restaurant manager, one should select the Food & Beverage Service department of the Hotel.

Career after completion of Hotel Management degree:

In the department of Food and Beverage Service, one can start job as Associate , moving to Supervisor then Restaurant Manager and finally Food & Beverage Manager- who usually looks after multiple cuisine restaurants.
